The WNBA brings me hours of joy. When I manage to remember to record the games and then find the time to watch the games. Happenstance however,sometimes sneaks the deciding win to me before I get the chance to view the game, deflating the suspense and tension.
These games bring up feelings of pride and strength.... in this, my own athletic quest of memory wrestling! Speaking of the WNBA players? These women are amazing athletes. They are also a source of pride and strength for all women.
But, what is it that drives, causes, allows, the broadcasters to call these athletes "girls" or "ladies"? I mean, their counterparts in the NBA are never referred to as "boys". We do know that "gentlemanly" does not even connote the same meaning as "ladylike".
LADY: 1, well-bred, well-mannered, courteous. regarded as having the characteristics of a good family and high social position;2. an informal name for wife
GENTLEMAN— n 1.a man regarded as having qualities of refinement associated with a good family 2. man who is cultured, courteous, and well-educated
3. a polite name for a man.
What about these strong, athletic, pushing, shoving, wrestling, running, jumping, smashing athletes is "ladylike"?
These are strong women, not little girls. Strong women.
Young girls watching strong, athletic, pushing, shoving, wrestling, running, jumping, smashing women athletes have new air to breathe... the Women's locker room. And all of the benefits therein.
